Cormac - here’s the simple room (flattened p/shop) file. If we want to animate (or delete) any of the lines in this image I could take the moving image/dv you work with (on this image) and then play with it in after effects.
This simple room (able to be zoomed in and out of) was one of my original ideas about having virtual rooms that seemed to elongate the physical space. As if the dancing body was a long way from the people/viewers/guests in the house.

Two photoshop files, both at 150dpi, and both about 1500 x 1100 pixels.

First one - Set 2 (15.4 Mg)

Second one - Set 3 (11.6 Mg).

Of the house ‘entry’ options (third image), I tend to prefer the final one — in which the entire screen lowers down to close the audience into the space. Thoughts?

In the first image (of the four houses), the last one approximates a possible ‘feel’ for the house front that will be animated at the beginning of the work. ie we’ll make a line drawing of that image. Kris had an idea to ‘roof’ the house with a single light from above (hence the yellow ‘roof’)…. this could definitely work as a form of ‘pre-state’.

Some initial images of area under the floor/ceiling (depending on perspective) - lit from underneath in blacked out space.

Some early drafts of interiors by Elizabeth. She has been using simple collage as a starting point. This was in response to being concerned about replicating modernist architectural drawings … what is interesting though is that these may present a means of ‘breaking down’ the disparity between the video and animation components of the moving image. The use of textures (even those of the paper in the process of scanning) … this pushes the ‘location’ to more make believe … a very clear construction - and not so obviously a representation of an ACTUAL house. I find myself responding really strongly to the mix of abstraction and representational … and also the ‘messyness’ of them — not clean, with the space (on the page) very active, and ‘hybrid’.

Any thoughts?

Cormac - perhaps you might like to download and drop into FCP - perhaps see what it’s like to place keyed moving image next to, on top of, behind the images.

I’ll start considering ways in which these type of images might animate.

Some images of two houses/buildings designed by Shigaru Ban. The first three images are of “Curtain Wall House” (Tokyo, 1993-1995), the second two of “Naked House” (Saitama, Japan, 1999-2000).

Came across a couple of images in “Skin + Bones” that might be useful.

This Alber Ebaz shirt caught my eye - not sure why. I think I responded to the apparent movement in the shirt on the model’s body. If it was re designed for a man it might be a little too schoolboyish? (in Skin + Bones, p.95)

Completely different kettle of fish - I like the sense of age in the jacket, and also that it is moving towards almost a straightjacket look (in Skin + Bones, p.151)

Finally, this Vivienne Westwood image (Skin + Bones, p.244-245). I liked the semi-formality, but in particular was really into the weathered nature of the man’s outfit (down to the shoes).
