another animation
January 9th, 2007Something else to look at. Starting playing a little more with timings. Am thinking of this as perhaps an animation in which no body is present.
large images for Cormac
January 8th, 2007images/drafts from Kris
January 6th, 2007Of the house ‘entry’ options (third image), I tend to prefer the final one — in which the entire screen lowers down to close the audience into the space. Thoughts?
In the first image (of the four houses), the last one approximates a possible ‘feel’ for the house front that will be animated at the beginning of the work. ie we’ll make a line drawing of that image. Kris had an idea to ‘roof’ the house with a single light from above (hence the yellow ‘roof’)…. this could definitely work as a form of ‘pre-state’.
ok.
ciao.

more sounds
January 5th, 2007some more draft ideas.
found a house in canberra. very happy about that. it’s hot here now… is it hot in melbourne?
btw, anyone tried playing the first sample and the animation together?

Set 1 - Animation
January 2nd, 2007Animation of a drawing - animated in after effects, and then dropped into FCP for addition of the window. Timings of the line strokes can be altered (obviously), and can also drop background in or out etc … no end to possibilities etc. I thought about possibility of this ’scene’ starting with close up (ie full screen) of the window, and then lines/edges begin to animate in, as we zoom away from window …
Buy perhaps, Cormac, this might act as a provocation with you, and then we can refine the various animation/still drawing components around materials.
Perhaps my character could be located partially around the ‘corner’ present in this material - half visible, half not??

listen
January 1st, 2007in an effort to feel like i am contributing to this project in a pragmatic way i am hereby uploading this sample audio for all to enjoy. it’s two minutes and is a texture that is based on domestic sounds that have been manipulated. actually, listen first and read later. it is designed to be played at a low level. there is some development of this material that i will attempt to post in the next day or two.
happy new year.
oh, it’s an AAC encoded file with an extension of .m4a
hope there’s no problems listening - let me know if there is!
compositing trial
December 21st, 2006Doing a bit of playing in fcp. Quite like the opacity of the body … incompleteness of both layers, and a softening of the white clothing into the background.
Notes/thinking from first work underneath
December 21st, 2006Two scenarios here. The first are some brief notes to my experience of working under the platform for the ‘first’ time (which is on video in previous post) (and subsequent responses to Shannon & Kris’s thoughts). The second are my notes/thoughts from watching Shannon moving under the floor - ie my first time watching with light etc.
Me doing.
Very aware of the beams and ‘handles’ under the floor - useful as leverage - but not simply for holding onto to with hands.
Also wondering about audio possibilities - of mic’ing the structure so that it resonates very strongly … or maybe it being built as a highly resonant structure?
From Shannon’s notes ..
Stillness - allowing body to be scanned. “I want to see you”. “I wanted to get closer to you”.
I had a sense that physical accumulations might be useful in this (under) place.
Shannon felt as if information was ‘coming up’ to her (but not always).
Idea of having head rests - like I have domesticised the space.
Noticed vibrations of the floor/beams.
She wondered what was outside the space for me - maybe I am looking through ‘windows’?
The word ‘habitat’ became important. And of habits.
Shannon felt pressure to be watching under for so long - but altered if get other elements going?
Question Kris raised: How to introduce space to viewers?
I considered that maybe this ‘floor’ is in fact a ceiling or roof; one that lets in the elements.
Me Watching from above ..
~I felt giddy/dizzy.
~The view is partial (what a surprise).
~I enjoyed foldings/unfoldings of the body - it seemed to help me ‘locate’ SB.
~Skin was good - its contrast with the blackness of the floor I was viewing through.
~I felt a little uneasy (at first) walking on the boards. I very much doubt they could be wider.
~Pacing - allowing plenty of space/slowness in the work - it’s density is already evident. How to let the repositioning/reconfiguring of the body/image occur … and to find ways of clearly signing each image/imagining.
~It would be good to work with a lighting designer - so many possibilities!
~ Idea of covering data projectors to make for truly dark walls - which might allow viewers to see shadows beyond the underworld.
~ Materials in which Shannon was ‘just living’ appealed to me - they seemed to cut against the perceptual abstraction generated by the viewing situation (through floor).
~ SB spent time with her arms behind her - clinging to the beams - swinging. It was sensual … sound, breath … strength.
~ Text - had strong urge to hear live/recorded text … aesthetic biases are hard to shake.
~ decreasing brightness of lx seemed to make space LESS for the viewer, and more about privacy of the dancer/mover.
~ SB’s back - VERY close to floor - almost pushing through it. ~ I though of a beach house - b/c of orange space and the cheap wooden floor?
~ SB moved along lines of beams - scything her body in two (from my perspective).
~ I experienced flashes of light when blinking (sometimes) - it seemed to be from when the light bounced of edge of floor boards. But not sure.
~ decreasing lx levels increased abstraction of body - sculpting it.
~ Can look to alter levels of birdies - some from higher, others at floor level - just to increase options in terms of how the body is lit (it tends to be backlit with current setup).
~ Enjoyed the upside down body - feet below mine.
~ I wonder about audience numbers - it felt like 4-6 to me when watching today. Many more and then capacity to track the body is greatly reduced … but we need to test this.
Ceiling/Floor - video extracts
December 21st, 2006Extracts from short improvisation with light and movment under the floor/ceiling.
